Lighting-Round Challenges
Day #7:
Group Lightning Round: The Championship Round
a) Who is pictured in Mystery Portrait #2? (see the file attached to this email)
b) Help! For a movie we're making, we need an audio recording of someone reading the first three sentences of Aesop's fable about "The Lion and the Mouse." Send Mr. Patrick and Mr. Paul an audio file of someone reading those first three sentences. (Hint: Vocaroo)
c) Ouch! You've been knocked unconscious, and when you wake up, you realize that you're inside some kind of submarine. You look at the control panel and a dial tells you that you are underwater at a depth of almost 11,000 meters below sea level! The question is: Where are you, and which direction do you need to go to head back towards Michigan (e.g., north, south-west)?
d) Help! Our propaganda poster is about to go to the printer, but someone by accident erased the text. We need a caption or slogan--fast! Your challenge is to invent a caption or slogan that will fit with the poster and to place the text you write directly on the image--so that the words and the picture are together in the same file. Attach the new file to an email and send it to Mr. Patrick and Mr. Paul.

Day #6:
Group Lightning Round 1:
a) Who is pictured in Mystery Portrait #1? (see the file attached to this email)
b) What is the shortest distance--measured in Olympic-sized swimming pools--from the NorthWest Activities Center to the Motown Records Museum? (Give your answer in swimming pool lengths--for example, "24 and a half swimming pools")
c) What insect do most Americans eat hundreds of times every year? Why?
d) Help! Our magazine is about to go to the printer, but there's a problem with the cartoon that's supposed to appear on page 1. Two problems, actually. The basic problem is this: the cartoon's caption has disappeared! Also: no one remembers what the caption was! Please help us by writing a new caption that fits with the cartoon and that will make the reader laugh and placing your caption on the picture so that the words and the picture are together in the same file. (To show you what we mean, we are attaching to this email the cartoon that needs to be fixed, and also an example of a cartoon that has its caption.) Thank you so much for your help!
(Hint: Pixlr.)

Day #4:
a) Send Mr. Patrick and Mr. Paul a two-color pie chart that shows the percentage of messages you receive every day (from TV, from the web, from billboards, from your friends, from books, from your parents, etc.) that are deceptive as opposed to the percentage that are not deceptive.
b) Help! Your friend Dan has been kidnapped and taken to the capital city of a foreign country. He does not know where he is. In the house where he is being held prisoner, there is kitchen, and Dan has noticed that, when he puts a pot of water on the stove, it boils at 90 degrees Celsius/194 degrees Fahrenheit (instead of 100 degrees Celsius/212 degrees Fahrenheit, as it does in Detroit). With this one clue, can you figure out what country and city Dan is in?

At what time do you need to dial your friend's number--in Detroit time--to wake her up in Tromso at 7am? Bonus question: Will it be dark or light outside your friend's window in Tromso at 7am?
b) What mammal lives longer, on average, than any other mammal?
